About MMAS

Our Mission & History

Mass Music & Arts Society (MMAS) provides a cultural home for artists, audiences, and aspiring performers of all ages. At our core is a rich schedule of theater productions, performing arts education, art exhibits, and live entertainment. The synergy of these offerings honors individual artistic interests through diverse creative opportunities.

All business decisions at MMAS stem from a sincere belief in the principles of inclusion, diversity, and accessibility. First and foremost, we strive to present events which reflect and educate the broad nature of our surrounding communities.  Our fundamental goal at MMAS is to promote an increasingly vibrant, diverse and inclusive creative community, leadership structure and working environment.

Since our founding in 1993 with just $8, Executive Director Ken Butler and a handful of artists have worked tirelessly to create a home for the arts in southeastern Massachusetts. Today, MMAS operates the MMAS Black Box Theater, the Morini Art Gallery, and the MMAS Academy for Performing Arts, providing an extraordinarily wide array of artistic programs, performances, and opportunities for both aspiring and experienced performers, artists, and patrons from across the region.

 Who We Are

A quarter century ago, eight friends formed a non-profit (501 (c)(3)) organization to support the arts and artists.

Today, their brainstorm has grown into a thriving arts organization – the Mass Music & Arts Society Black Box Theater & Morini Gallery (MMAS) – recognized throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.

MMAS has an annual operating budget of just over $500,000 and attracts about 10,000 audience members, patrons and performers from as far north as New Hampshire and south to Rhode Island and Cape Cod.  More than 2,000 of our patrons live in Bristol County, many of whom eat dinner in local restaurants before attending a show.

Audiences come to MMAS because they know they will see exceptional productions in the intimate 76-seat Black Box Theater for a fraction of the cost of a ticket in Boston or Providence.

MMAS is also home to the Morini Art Gallery which offers exhibitions of works by local and regional artists.

MMAS is an active, contributing member of the regional community.  Annually, MMAS gives scholarships to local students heading to college to study the arts.

Each year MMAS donates between $3,000 and $5,000 worth of tickets to community and non-profit organizations in Mansfield, Sharon, Foxboro, Plainville, Norton, Easton and Attleboro for their own fundraising efforts. MMAS also provides free tickets to local Councils on Aging to share with their clients.  As a result of MMAS’ significant contributions, the Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce recognized MMAS with its “Good Neighbor” award in 2015.

MMAS is a volunteer organization; our actors, set builders, backstage and technical people are all volunteers; as is everyone who works the ticket office and concession area for every performance. Volunteers are used in the office, at the arts festival and plan our annual gala.   Each year, volunteers give almost 30,000 hours to MMAS.

In late 2020 our the Black Box Theater and Morini Gallery moved from 377 North Main St., into our property down the road to 888 South Main St., Mansfield.
